The Laboratory of Advanced, Composite, Nano Materials, Nanoprocesses and Nanotechnology (R-NanoLab) is based at the School of Chemical Engineering of the National Technical University of Athens.
Since 2007, under the supervision of Professor Costas Charitidi, R-NanoLab has participated in 90 national and European research projects with a budget of €180 million. With a highly interdisciplinary research focuses on design, synthesis, processing & characterization of advanced materials, including polymers, nanomaterials and composites. Its work combines fundamental research with applied science, aiming to develop innovative materials and technologies that respond to real industrial and societal needs. Strong collaboration with the market and industry is a key driver of its innovation strategy.
Their interdisciplinary research activities combine expertise in chemistry, materials science, process and mechanical engineering, textile technology, and plant design. This combination enables us to address challenges from fundamental research to industrial implementation, developing novel materials, manufacturing technologies, analytical methods, and digital solutions.
The laboratory has extensive expertise in the development of carbon nanotubes, graphene-based materials, magnetic nanoparticles and nanocarriers. R-NanoLab supports technology scale-up through life cycle assessment (LCA), safe-by-design approaches, techno-economic analysis, sustainability studies and machine learning, helping bridge the gap between research and industrial production.
In addition, R-NanoLab is an active member of major European networks and initiatives in materials characterization, materials modelling, nanosafety, pilot-scale production, carbon fibres, advanced composites, and the circular economy, reinforcing its role as a leading contributor to Europe’s advanced materials ecosystem.
